Mellow Mushroom Pizza Bakers, Durham NC

OK, first things first, know that as far as pizza toppings go, Mushrooms are perhaps, my most unfavorite topping. I really do not enjoy mushrooms on pizza, so eating pizza at a place with 6 foot tall mushroom sculptures as ambiance, was…. delicious!!!

I’m going to go ahead and spoil the surprise. I had one of the best pizzas I’ve ever eaten in my life here. But the apps and other pizzas we ordered, ranged from not-life changing, to disappointing…


We ordered a garlic bread and a cheesy bread for apps. They were lame. The cheesy one was salvaged by the cheese. The bread was thick and just… bready. We didn’t really like them. Only later we heard that the pretzels were super yum… Next time I’ll try the pretzels. We actually had to fight for who would have to finish off the garlic loaf.

Don’t get me wrong, the mood was excellent, especially because we ordered 2 pitchers of one of my most fave beers in the world, Red Oak!

My dad tried to snatch an entire pitcher for himself, as it is “the best beer there is” in his opinion.



No worries though, I was able to fill both fists from the other pitcher….

…and after some refreshment, It was time for the pizza!


We ordered 3 pies, all with wonderful names. We got the Philospher’s Pie, the Mega-Veggie, and The Kosmic Karma. They all had an amazing crustal-rim, and after months of research, it is clear that the crusts were so delicious because they were brushed with butter and parmesan was sprinkled pre-baking. I swear, it’s a magic trick I’m going to steal!

The Philosopher’s Pie had an olive oil and garlic base, topped with steak, portobello mushrooms, artichoke hearts, kalamata olives, provolone, mozzerella, and feta.

My dad really liked it.

… You had to really, REALLY like kalamata olives for that one.


The Mega-Veggie had basically every veggie on it… Red sauce base with mozzerella, sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, green peppers, mushrooms, onion, black olives, roma tomatoes, broccoli, feta, banana peppers, artichoke hearts, AND TOFU. It was pretty good, and it was Jen’s favorite, but we all favored another…

The Kosmic Karma pie, a red-sauce pizza with mozzerella, sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, feta, roma tomatoes, and a pesto swirl. This was the pizza I picked out, and it was the crowd favorite (5/6). When I took the first bite of it, the piano player stopped. The lights dimmed. The entire table just looked at me and wondered what was wrong.

What was wrong was that pizza. I didn’t know what to make of it, and my face was giving a look of sheer terror… OK, not really, but it was soo good I didn’t speak for a minute while I just tasted it. It was a pizza for tasting! I forced myself to save one slice for the next day—to judge reheat-ability of course, and it held up beautifully!

We definitely will be returning, and when we do, we’re getting the Kosmic Karma, some pretzels, and perhaps 3 pitchers of Red Oak. I can’t wait!!!

If I didn’t order the apps, This place would get a 9/10. But those apps were a real drag. Overall I have to say 8/10, BUT, I’m giving the Kosmic Karma THE GOLDEN PIZZA WHEEL AWARD!!!!
